O2 confirms 4G trials for UK capital
“Bubbly smartphone retailer and network provider O2 has revealed it is to trial high-speed 4G LTE networks in the UK with the trial to run across London until June 2012.
With 4G being trialled in a number of areas of the country including Cornwall and Slough, today’s announcement marks the first plans to bring the super fast 4G systems to the nation’s capital with 40-square kilometres of London to be serviced by 25 4G masts erected by O2.
“Today’s launch of the UK’s first 4G London trial network demonstrates our commitment to delivering 4G to our customers at the earliest opportunity,” said Ronan Dunne, Chief Executive Officer of Telefónica UK. “The work we are doing now will lay the foundations for our commercial 4G network when it launches in the UK.”

With around 1,000 people to take part in the 4G trial that will provide wireless download speeds of around 100Mbps, O2 has teamed up with a number of partners including retailer John Lewis to fully test the fledgling technologies. Those taking part in the trials will be supplied with a Samsung branded 4G dongle in order to receive the highspeed network that is already available in certain parts of the US.”
