London Underground to get free wi-fi
“London Underground stations will be loaded with wi-fi access from July, offering commuters and tourists free unlimited web access. Though after the Olympics, non Virgin customers will have to pay.
London Underground stations will get wi-fi access from this July, and it will be free to all until the end of the Olympic Games.
Though after the Games, unless you’re a Virgin Media customer you’ll have to pay.
We understand the service will only be available at the stations themselves, not in the tube tunnels.
It will launch as a free, unlimited service for anyone to use, but after the end of the Games this will be reduced to access to a home page with service updates, journey planners, and an entertainment portal with news, gossip, film, TV and music reviews.
For a price, users will be able to sign on to a PAYG service to launch online browsers from the home page. Costs for this service are yet to be confirmed.
Virgin Media customers however will still have access to free and unlimited wi-fi on the Underground, as part of their broadband subscriptions.
Virgin Media will install wi-fi at over 80 stations ahead of the summer, but by the end ‘up to 120’ will be connected.”
